Visa Extension / Change of Status
Extend Your Stay: If you wish to extend your stay in the United States, you must file a Form I-539, Application to Extend or Change Nonimmigrant Status with USCIS before your authorized stay expires. If you stay in the United States longer than authorized, you may be barred from returning or could be deported from the United States. Check the date on the lower right corner of your Form I-94, Arrival-Departure Record, to determine the expiration date of your authorized stay. We recommend that you apply to extend your stay at least 45 days before your authorized stay expires.
Change of Nonimmigrant Status: You may apply for a change of nonimmigrant status if you were lawfully admitted to the United States on a nonimmigrant visa, your nonimmigrant status remains valid, you have not violated the conditions of your status, and you have not committed any crimes that make you ineligible.
You do not need to apply for a change of nonimmigrant status if you were admitted to the United States for business purposes (B-1 visa category) and you wish to remain in the United States for pleasure before your stay authorization expires.
